History of Salamanca Spain
Belong to a first-level political division of the Kingdom of Spain; Salamanca Spain is located in the west with the population of 160,000. Lies by the Tormes River, having a 150m bridge built on 26 arches, originated from the bridge built by the ancient Romans in the 16th century.
The bridge built by the ancient Romans is the first and also the lasting bridge that was build. It was built on an arch as its basic structure and utilizing concrete as well. It was built n the 142BC, named the Ponte Rotto which means broken bridge now is the oldest Roman stone bridge.
Founded by the Vacceos, a Celtic tribe, in the pre-Ancient Rome, and used Salamanca as a fort near the Duero River where their territory was located. The city begins to take more interest as a commercial hub with the victory of the Romans against the Carthaginians. The city was called Salamantic or Helmantica during this period.
In the year 712AD, Moors managed to conquer Salamanca Spain. The defensive wall was being strengthened with the Mozarab population being assigned. However, the city was caught in between the line of Christian North and muslim South, as they were facing a unceasing fight with the Astur-Leanese Kingdom. Ramn de Borgoa reconquered the city from the Moors in the 12th century.
The Peninsular War fought on July 22, 1812 was a mighty setback for Salamanca Spain but caused the French a serious damage. To this day, the Salamanca treat it as a defining moment in the history of Spain history as there were thousands of man lost their life in a short period of time.
