University of Salamanca
Created in the year 1218 by Alfonso IX, the University of Salamanca soon became one of the most significant and also prestigious academic centres in Europe.
Being financially supported by Alfonso X, in the year of (1252 – 1282), the wealth and also the reputation of the University increase greatly. With the attractive courses provided by the University of Salamanca; the canon law and civil law, students from the university of Paris and Bologna opted to join the Salamanca University.
In the 16th century, the city’s fortunes and economy was depending on the University as one in five of Salamanca’s population was student.
Christopher Columbus was a lecturer in the university and manage to taught Hernan Cortes , whom however returned home at the age of 17 not completing his study.
John Mair a Paris based Scottish philosopher, was a heavy influence to the scholars in the university. He is the person who established the Spanish law to the right of living in liberty and having the right to life and also was the first international statement of human rights.
Huge wave of people from different part of Spain is coming to the university to study. This again still plays major roles in contributing the percentage of the city’s population. The student not only gives the country a better income economically, but also contributing to the night life activity and also the social activity that is in the city during the weekdays and also during the weekends. In due to this, Salamanca is in the top list of cities with the largest and highest bar per inhabitant ratios in the Europe.
